Description
When your trusty 1020 starts burning oil, losing power, or making those concerning noises deep in the engine, it’s time for some serious work. An engine rebuild might sound daunting, but with the right parts and some patience, you can bring that old workhorse back to life. This basic overhaul kit gives you the core components to rebuild your 3-cylinder diesel engine and get back to the work that needs doing.
What You’re Getting
- Complete sleeve and seal package that restores proper cylinder bore dimensions
- New pistons with rings and pins that bring back compression and reduce oil consumption
- Full gasket set that seals everything up tight from oil pan to valve cover
- Crankshaft seals to stop those frustrating leaks at both ends of the engine
- Quality components that’ll handle another few decades of farm work
Built for Real Farm Work
The 1020 series was John Deere’s go-to utility tractor for thousands of farmers who needed reliable power for smaller operations, hay work, and general chores around the place. These tractors found their way into operations running everything from livestock feeding to light tillage, where their compact size and dependable 152 cubic inch diesel made them perfect for jobs that didn’t need a big tractor but still demanded real pulling power.
Made to Last
This kit uses the same sleeve design and materials that made these engines so durable in the first place. The 3-ring pistons with the 2-groove sleeve setup provides excellent compression and oil control, while the complete gasket set uses modern materials that handle the heat cycles and pressure better than what was available when your tractor was new.
Good to Know
This is a basic kit that doesn’t include bearings, so you’ll need to have your crankshaft checked and order rod and main bearings separately. Don’t forget to check the length of your rod bolts and add either TP-R74194 for 2.125 inch or TP-R80033 for 2.325 inch bolts. Most experienced mechanics recommend having the block checked for straightness and the crankshaft inspected before starting the rebuild. Winter’s often the best time for this project when you can work at your own pace without field work calling.
